Information for: Recreational Therapy / Therapeutic Recreation Professionals & Students Health, Education and/or Human Service Professionals Consumers, Advocates, Family Members This web site is managed by the North Carolina Recreational Therapy Association (NCRTA), a non-profit, professional organization of licensed recreational therpists and assistants; certified therapeutic recreation specialists; and  persons/organizations who support recreational therapy services in North Carolina. Recreational therapists (LRT) and recreational therapy assistants (LRTA) are licensed by the North Carolina Board of Recreational Therapy Licensure etsablished in October 2005. The titles, Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (TRS) and Therapeutic Recreation Assistant (TRA) are used by individuals who were certified by the previous State of  North Carolina Therapeutic Recreation Certification Board who have not yet reached their certification renewal date and obtained the new license. The title, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), is a national certification credential.   According to North Carolina law, only individuals licensed by North Carolina's Board of Recreational Therapy Licensure may practice or represent themselves as recreational therapy/therapeutic recreation professionals in North Carolina.  See certification  information.
